Social Media is a tool, it has good points, and bad points, just like every other tool you will use in your business. You can try to figure it out on your own, spending countless hours that you don’t have, or you can get help. Social Media changes daily and there are tons of dead ends. Networks going nowhere fast, and there is always something changing, so information is both vital and important.

The first step is finding out how you can use Social Media in your own business, or if you should be using it at all. There was a time when I felt that not every business needed to use Social Media, but as I got exposed to more information and got a clearer idea of what was possible, and how big of a change Social Media’s implementation was to our society and our world I changed my mind. Social Media is for everybody, and now is the best time to figure out what you don’t know and get prepared. Social Media is changing the way we do everything, and I don’t say that lightly. You have not even begun to understand how many changes Social Media will have on the way you do everything, not in a decade, but instead in a few years. So don’t wait for your competition to run circles around you, get the answers you need now.

Are you prepared? There are a number of business owners who believe that Social Media is a trend and that it’s a fad. Here is some good news and some bad news, Social Media is not going anywhere. What will happen is it will evolve and change over time? The more you know the better. There is also some other great news anyone can do Social, once you get used to it, you will find that it is a very valuable tool, and a great resource. The bad news is doing nothing will put you and your business in the back of the class, and may determine if your business even exists 5 years from now.

What you need to know right now? When I work with companies, non-profits, and individuals whether professionally, or in businesses, my goal is to teach them. Social Media is a science, and what works today may not work tomorrow. You can also make some mistakes that can cost you time, money, and even worst your reputation. Social Media is an incredible resource, but it can get out of hand quickly. It can chew up tons of time, and it can cost you tons of money, especially if you don’t know what you are doing. A Social Media presence is something you need, and you need it now. The questions you need to find out is the where and the how, and those questions need to be answered in depth and strategically. You also need to understand how you are going to show up on Social Media and what you ultimately are looking to get from the process.

Education is just as important as implementation. You need to understand the why, as much as you need to understand the how, and in this kind of environment that needs to be something you evaluate on a monthly, if not a quarterly basis because things change.

Social Media is full of opportunities, and it is well worth your time and your energy. Ask the questions you need to ask, and get the information you need so you can use it more effectively. Be committed to finding what works for you, and be willing to put the time in to learn how to use it effectively!
